The Legal Authority
Under 18 U.S.C. § 925(c), the Attorney General has the authority to grant relief from federal firearms disabilities. This process allows individuals prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior conviction to apply for restoration if it is established that the circumstances regarding the disability, and the applicant's record and reputation, are such that the applicant will not be likely to act in a manner dangerous to public safety and that the granting of the relief would not be contrary to the public interest.
The program launch marks a significant shift in federal policy. However, the process is notoriously complex, requiring exhaustive documentation and legal precision. Errors in the application typically lead to summarily denied relief without a chance for immediate appeal.
If you are an individual federally prohibited from possessing, or otherwise handling, firearms for one or more of the following reasons, pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 922(g), then you are eligible to apply for Federal Firearms Rights Restoration (FFRR).
