The U.S. Department of Justice has established a new Federal Firearm Rights Restoration Program that gives eligible individuals an opportunity to apply for restoration of their federal firearm rights.

If a past nonviolent felony conviction is preventing you from legally possessing a firearm, you may now have a path forward.

The first public application period is limited to 5,000 applicants.

Applications open to invited candidates on September 25, 2026.
A SECOND CHANCE FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS
A felony conviction can result in the loss of your federal firearm rights long after you have completed your sentence and moved forward with your life.
The new federal process recognizes that a lifetime prohibition may not be appropriate in every case.
Under the Department of Justice program, applications are reviewed individually. The government will consider the circumstances that originally resulted in the firearm prohibition as well as your subsequent conduct, record, reputation, and whether restoring your rights would present a danger to public safety or be contrary to the public interest.
Restoration is not automatic or guaranteed. But for eligible individuals, there is finally a process to ask.
